When you’re working with an agent to list your house for sale, she’ll most likely use a modern, Bluetooth enabled, lockbox to manage access to your house while it is on the market.

This high-tech tool can set the time when your house key can be retrieved, records the person who accessed the box, and records when the key was returned.

Visiting agents can even log their clients’ comments about the home and their level of interest.

If your house is not listed with an agent, you can put your own lockbox on your house to give others access to your home when you’re not there. They are available online and at home improvement or household goods stores. Shop for “key safe boxes” that you can affix to your front door handle, a hose bib or a pipe outside your house.

You may also want a key or combination lock on various parts of your home.

A combination key box can be massively helpful if you have family or friends, contractors, cleaners and Christmas decorators who may need to get in your house when you’re not home.

This device allows you to place up to five keys inside, then affix the box to an immovable object like a door knob or hose bib. You can make up your own code or combination.

Having more than one key is handy if you have several locks you’d like to provide access to in your house.

You could include a key to your front door, a key to your garage, a key to your side gate, a key to your storage shed, and a key to your car. It’s a perfect way to turn your house over to your family and friends when you’re on vacation.

Of course, you’ll want to buy appropriate locks for each of the aforementioned items and identify them clearly before you put the keys in the lock box.

Or you can get combination padlocks for the gate, the shed, and install a combination keypad on the garage door. Then leave the car key in a kitchen drawer.
